The aim of this article is to compare dwarf Thunderers with Crossbowmen. This won't go into statistics or probability but will be fairly basic. Firstly, the advantage of thunderers:
Thunderers
Thunderers cost two points more than crossbowmen but can move and fire, are armour piercing, and get plus one to hit at close range. While this makes them very good for a stand and shoot charge reaction, their short range can be a problem. They can have shields and a full command, but the command isn't worth it, except maybe a musician. Also, in real world terms they are only available in blisters, meaning ten thunderers, would be £20 (3 blisters and one from mail order.) If your on a budget this may not be your best option.
Crossbowmen
With a longer range than Thunderers and a cheaper points cost, these often seem the better option. However, having no move and fire, not being armour piercing and getting no bonuses at close range is a bit of a problem. However, their longer range is very good and they come into their own against poorly armoured targets. In real world terms you can get 16 of these for £15 and theyr'e plastic!
Conclusion
So what do I recomend? In small games take one or the other. The best way of judging is what you can afford. However, in larger games I go for a unit of each as they compliment each other very well.
