Tactica: Dwarfs - petrus

Deployment

In my opinion this is the most crucial part of a game for any dwarf player because it isn't easy to re deploy. The 10 tips I have are:

1. If you only have one war machine, by it the Master rune of disguise. That way the enemy won't know where it is till turn 1, when you deploy it on the opposite flank from his fast cavalry.
2. Put war machines and missile troops on hills if possible.
3. Protect war machines and missile troops with normal troops.
4. Deploy units that compliment each other well next to each other. i.e., a unit of warriors with great weapon just to the side of some Ironbreakers and a bit further back, so that when the Ironbreakers get charged, you can flank charge the unit.
5. Don’t count on being able to charge. Remember that when deploying.
6. Protect your flanks.
7. Try not to remind your opponent about your miners.
8. Don’t isolate your war machines from your main force.
9. Dwarven missile troops can rank up and fight effectively. If using large numbers in a unit it can be an idea to get a command.
10. Pretend to whisper secrets to your general. This will scare your opponent far more than most other things you can do.

Movement, shooting and combat.

Here are some points I have learnt about movement, combat and shooting. This is nowhere near complete so remember there's more to movement, shooting and combat than this.

In the movement phase, your force is likely to remain static. However, marching forward can surprise your opponent. Use one unit to tie up an enemy while another one hits it in the flank. If charged, you could always flee the unit and have another unit ready to hit the charging unit in the flank.

When shooting, remember the range you guessed from a war machine last turn, and subtract the movement of that unit from the perfect distance. Turn 2 should see improved shooting. Also, don't be afraid to move Thunderers. Move and fire is very good.

Combat can be worked out for the most part before charging has even taken place. If you have a standard (+1), 4 ranks (+3) and a rune of battle on the standard (+1) you have a combat resolution of 5 before casualties. This is useful for deciding whether or not things are going your way.

One last word: try combinations of different things and try experimenting with your own runic combos. Oh and read Dysartes article on Runes and their uses.
