Runic Wonders - Weapon Runes - Dysartes

There are some very nice runes in the armour section, and I certainly find them more useful than the weapon runes. One question that should be addressed is which kind of armour is it best to base your runes on. Generaly, I would say use Gromril armour, unless you're really short on points. Unless you use the Master Rune of Gromril, the 4+ save it gives you is the base for whatever you stick onto it. In the specific case of the Master Rune of Gromril, I'd suggest using heavy armour instead, if only because it feels more Dwarvish than using light armour as a base.

Master Rune of Steel - 75pts

This is certainly a different rune, with an effect that isn't really a common one in the game. Making you opponent re-roll his succesful to-wound rolls is quite a big thing, especially if he needed 4's or 5's to wound anyway. While it gives a massive boost to survivability to a T5 model, a lot of heroes will be carrying weapons that will make it easier for them to waound you, limiting the effect of this rune. Also, bear in mind that anything that automatically wounds won't be affected by this, as they have no successful rolls to reroll.

Master Rune of Adamant - 75pts

Adding to the toughness of your Dwarf makes your Heroes T5 and your Lords a mammoth T6, which all of a sudden makes it very difficult for basic troopers to wound them, unless they happen to be carrying Great Weapons. However, most characters will be carrying magical gubbins to a challenge, generally giving them some bonus to wound you - though it's still generally going to be tricky to would an angry T6 Dwarf who is intent on cutting you in half with his grandfather's axe.....

Master Rune of Gromril - 25pts

My personal favourite of the armour runes, especially when combined with a Rune of Resistance - a combination which makes failing armour saves a very tricky proposition indeed. It's quite cheap for the bonus it gives you as well. As mentioned above, this is the only rune I'd consider mounting n heavy arour instead of gromril, due to the fact tat it's basic effect is to increase your armour save. The 1+ armour save would combine quite well with the Rune of Shielding if you want a character who can survive missile fire outside of a unit.

Rune of Fortitude - 50pts

For the price you pay to get it, the +1 wound granted by the Rune of Fortitude isn't that big a return. Most things capable of killing a Dwarf character will tend to manage it whether you have an extra wound or not. Onthe flip side, when facing massed rank and file, having that one extra wound could make all the difference - the same applies when facing a cavalry charge.

Rune of Shielding - 30pts

If your character is going to be in a unit, then the"Look Out Sir!" rule will protect him just as well as this rune. However, if you fancy running a charatcer out on his own, then this could be very handy indeed. Also handy if a spellcaster decides to let rip with a fireball or something, as the rune affects magic missiles as well as normal missiles.

Rune of resistance - 25pts

My other personaly favourite armour rune, the Rune of Resistance allows you to reroll any failed saves. This is always a handy ability to have around, and combined with the Master Rune of Gromril, your opponent would have to have S9 to negate your armour save completely, and against anything else, you're chance of survival is much higher than normal. With the Master RUne of Spite as well, it becomes very difficult to knock such a Dwarf character out of action.

Rune of Iron - 15pts

Quite a cheap way to get a pretty basic Ward save, and two of them becomes respecable. However, each of this you add on to a suit of armour does reduce the number of other runes you could be taking, a fair few of which are more useful than this.

Rune of Stone - 5pts

How to get a 1+ save the cheap way - stick one of these on your Gromril armour, when your character has HW and shield. However, I prefer Master Rune of Gromril and a GW myself. It does boost the abse Gromril arour save to a 3+, which isn't to be sneezed at.
