The Art of RecruitmentYour army not lean enough? Are you being out muscled? Are you being out maneuvered? Are you being out shoot? Need a template in army building? I hope the following will help.Let's start with the perfect weapon - The Sword. You may want to know why. Imagine the sword as the army, The sword has all the pieces to make it the most effective in what it does. Each part enhances the others. So should your army... Tip equates to your heavy hitter, or main focus of the army. Edge equates to main troops to damage your opponent, range or melee. Guard equates to secondary troops to hold the line, kinda optional Handle is the support of the army. You should be able to breakdown a force in this way. Remember every part of your army should provide some threat against your opponent. The main and secondry troops are inter-changeable in their duties as well, depending on circumstances. One thing to keep in mind. Ranged attack is not that important if you have the movement, if you can fly, or if can get some reason to make your opponent come to you. Let's take a look at 2006's Rackham Open Confrontation Winner's army. (13 models, 7 cards, Authority) (Handle) Migail, royal blood, Chimerical glave, minor pendant of mirages. (Tip) Mounted musician of the Lion (Tip) Mounted Knight of the Lion (Edge) 2 Royal Guards (Guard) 6 Guards of Alahan (Edge) 2 sparklings Let's look at popular Red Oak army (8+ models, 6 cards) (Handle) Seriak, Pack Leader, Sylvan Animae Summoning (Tip) 2 Predator of Blood (Edge) 4 Wolfen Fang Warrior (Edge) Wolfen Sentinal Try the Ophidian Army I used at GenCon... (10 models, 5 cards) (Handle) S'Ynaqia, Putrescence & Internal Chaos (Tip) Ophidian Vortiran (Edge) 2 Ophidian Archers (Guard) 6 Ophidian Slaves Try Griffin Army (15 models, 6 cards) (Handle) Abel the Ill-Tempered, 2nd Incarnation (Tip) 2 Praetorian Guard (Guard) 6 Veterans of the Crusade (Edge) 6 Fusiliers 1st place GenCon NACORD tournament. (12 models, 6 cards) (Handle) Azhyan Adjaran - Hexalid Crossbow (Handle) Dirz Musician (Handle) Scorpion Oriflamme (Edge) Belisarius Clone (Tip) Dasyatis Clone (Tip) Centurus Clone (Edge) 3 Pest of Flesh (Edge) 3 Hybrid I apologize for some of these silly terms. Just needed a few good designation for the functions of some of these troops or how they are used. The main reason for having models for different roles is really a matter of practicality. At best, how many models do you think you can get into combat with at the same time using any army you create? Unless your opponent endulge you, it is near impossible to use all your melee fighters against your opponent's army. By the time you get there, he could have caused a toll against your army with ranged attacks. Similarly, you can't really have all shooters if your opponent can assault you quickly. Now this is not to say you can't make your army any other way. Like more archer? Like more regulars? Like more elites? If you have a particular style, by all means go fo it! I am just pointing out what makes some army successful. You can certainly forego certain elements by enhancing others. With the right tactics, you could overcome the lack of some diversity. The key is how to make your opponent play to your strength. Remember you may also have scenario objectives to tend to. Without some diversity, you would be a serious disadvantage in some of them.
