Warhammer Fantasy Battles - Games Day 2004

All information is gathered into its pertinent sections, with a misc section for those armies which may only have gotten 1 question, for instance. Thanks to BrainThrust for taking notes in the Design Studio, whilst I ran around with a camera, photoing anything that didn't move.

Ogre Kingdons

  • Bulls - Basic troops. Plastic regiment set, with 6 to a box. Bellower instead of a musician. Sculpted by Brian Nelson
  • Ironguts - elite unit. Plastic regiment set, 4 to a box, sculpted by Brian Nelson. Harder Ogres with a Great Weapon and extra armour.
  • Leadbelchers - missile support. Plastic regiment set, 4 to a box, sculpted by Brian Nelson. An artillery dice of shots per Ogre, but it takes a full turn to reload, so normally only one salvo per game.
  • Tyrant - Ogre in Charge. If anyone wants to try to take his job, have to go pit fight. Some ridiculously big weapons.
  • Butchers - Mages. "Gut Magic". Sort of Warrior pirest style crossed with normal magic. Powered by eating - the more powerful the spell, the more it hurts the Butcher.
  • Shrag the Slaughterer - special character Butcher. Cooked his Tyrant's Gnoblar. Outcast, with his cauldron attached to him as a badge of shame. Went on a pilgrimage, and is now the Prophet of the Great Maw.
  • Gnoblars - comedy relief/numerical support. Plastic regiment, 24 to a box, sculpted by Alex Hedstrom. 2 part plastics, body & head. Ogre marks Gnoblar as property by biting his ear. 2 Gnoblar Bearers on each Ogre fram.
  • Scraplauncher - artillery. Fires discarded weapons. "Inspired" by Dwarf Stone Thrower. Strength 3, big template Killing Blow!
  • Yhetees - semi-gribble. Off-shoot of Ogres, adapted to extreme cold. Breathe magical frost. Trish Morrisson sculpted. Fast, good over terrain - nice flanking unit.
  • Maneaters - veterans. Ex-mercenary Ogres that hve returned to their tribe, displaying exotic clothes, etc. Ninja Maneater with Gnoblar doing a flying kick!
  • Bulls, Maneaters, Ironguts and Leadbelchers will be available as Dogs of War units
  • Hunter - indepentant bloke. Has two Sabretusks, which he can sic on people. Could be Tyrant if wanted to,but doesn't.
  • Gnoblar Trappers - skirmishers. Follow the Hunters. Can Scout, and Set Traps.
  • Gorgers - Ogres what ain't quite right. Born without stomach, so always ravenously hungry. "Troglodyte". Turn up like Dwarf Miners.
  • Standard - Gnoblar look out boosts chance of Look Out Sir, Aargh! working.
  • Greasus Goldtooth - Over-Tyrant special character. Richest creature in the Old World. Can bribe enemy units, making them subject to stupidity.
  • Due out December 2004 - February 2005
Ogre Kingdoms Q&A

Are there any plans for a Gnoblar/Goblin mixed army? - Not as such, though we do have plans for a Gnoblar-themed army.

How many Ogre-sized models are we likely to see in a typical 2000pts Ogre Kingdoms army? - Between 25 and 40. Ish.

Lustria

  • Jungle fighting rules - 6 scenarios, rules for moving through jungle, regiments in Loose Order formation.
  • Encounters & events - new phase, the Encounter phase. Can play encounters of your opponent such as carnivorous plants, quicksand and poisonous monkeys.
  • New campaign system - set in Lustria
  • Background for the Rise of Sotek, plus army lists for Clan Pestilens and Sacred Host of Sotek
Rise of Sotek Q&A

What new models will there be with Rise of Sotek? - 3 new battalion boxes are being released. The first is going to be High Elves, the second Lizardmen, and the third Skaven. All will be getting new plastics in them, and Anthony Reynolds (I think) did mention Plague Rats and Rat Swarms before Steve Pritchard shut him up. Other than this, they'll be trying to fill gaps in the range, and Skaven and Lizardmen will be getting new special characters

Wood Elves

  • Released 2nd half 2005
  • Everything being redone
  • The background is changing, becoming darked and grimmer - you don't want to go into the woods today.....
  • The Wood Elves are not nice people. Not good, not evil, just not very nice.
  • Very unpredictable
  • Loren is as much a part of the army as the Wood Elves themselves
  • Forest spirits - the Wood Elves have changed the forest spirits as much as the forest spirits have changed the Wood Elves.
  • The army list is being written so you can take all Wood Elves, all Forest Spirits or a mix of the two.
  • Trying to make it fun for both sides
  • The Wood Elves are an attacking, dynamic army
  • The penalty for shooting at long range is back, but Wood Elves don't get the move and fire penalty any more
  • Unspecified advantage to shooting at short range
  • Every unit has a unique role.
  • There will be new units, including more up-close-and-personal units.
Wood Elves Q&A

How similar will the Wood Elves be to the Beastmen, in terms of gameplay? - Not really similar. We are trying to make them a good match-up, though. If the Wood Elves have too much skirmishing shooting, then its too annoying for the opponent.

There has been a rumour going round that the reason Wood Elves got put back was due to you working on plastic slayers. True or false? - False. Ogre Kingdoms pushed WE back, but they're still only 6 months behind where I'd planned to release them when I took over Warhammer development.

What sort of cavalry will the Wood Elves have? Will they have chariots? - No chariots. Glade Riders and Warhawk Riders will still be there, along with a new unit that hits about as hard as heavy cavalry.

Will Wood Elves be getting Fairies? - Nope.

Questions and Answers (WFB Seminar)

Now that Storm of Chaos is over, will the Kislevites get a full army list of their own? - Not at the moment. The original plan was three articles in White Dwarf- the ally list, the special characters, and then a Cult of Ulric style army list. There are no hard and fast plans at the moment, but we'd like to.

As a Dark Elf player, I keep finding my enemies are taking just cavalry - any chances of something to help Dark Elves vs cavalry? - Not until we redo the entire book.

What is the future for the Dogs of War? - Well, once Ogre Kingdoms is released, they'll have a lot of Ogres! Seriously, Dogs of War is a strange army. We have a project in the pipeline for the future, looking at rules for really large games, which could well include mercinaries asa contingent of your larger army. However, at the moment there are no plans for a Dogs of War army book.

Anything on Chaos Dwarfs? - Bigger hats.

Are there any plans to do anything more with the East of Warhammer, such as Araby or Cathay? No plans at present. Ogre Kingdoms are the furthest east we are going for now.

After the Storm of Chaos, will you be doing rules for the characters players sent to you? - Nope

Any news on Tzaangors or Slaangors? - Not yet. The Pestigors and Khorngors were extra releases over and above what was planned.

What's happening with Nagash? - Theer are no plans at the minute. The stuff in Storm of Chaos was a way of laying foundations for when they do want to do stuff.

Will the Bugman's campaign be released as a campaign book? - Nope, it isn't a global campaign, merely a sries of ideas from the UK WD team. A DIY campaign, if you will.

Are theer any plans for Ogres riding monsters? - No (see Forge World).

What happened to the characters involved in Storm of Chaos? - Read White DWarf 300. It might not be what you expect.

Are we likely to see units from Araby as Khemrian allies? - There are plans for a Warmaster Araby army, but nothing at the minute for Warhammer itself.

What is the next worldwide campaign for Warhammer likely to be? - Lustria ties into it as a smaller-scale campaign. The big campaigns use up a lot of resources, both from us and from the web team. 1492: The Conquest of the New World will be a global event, but will be more of a historical thing than end of the world......again.

Chaos Dwarf plans? - Bigger hats. Plans, no. Ideas, possibly. Lots of work required on these guys, about the same as has been required for the Wood Elves. Several years away at the earliest.

Plastic Chaos Knights? - Plans, no. Theoretically, then maybe. We're going to be doing a lot of plastics in the next 4-5 years.

Is the Lady of the Lake a Wood Elf? - No comment.

What are the next big releases? You mean other than Ogre Kingdoms, Lustria and the Wood Elves? I can't say. If I say, and get it wrong, then we get situations where there are "hordes of angry Wood Elf players burning the office down".

Is Sigmar a Primarch? - No. Have you started work on a system revision yet? - Sort of; we're always looking at ways to improve the system. We want to adjust the magic system, but we're not sure how yet. We're definately not going back to cards, though.

Will we see any more US contributions, like the General's Compendium? - Unlikely, as we've "stolen" the guy who was behind that, Jeremy Vetock. We'll do stuff like that instead, now.

Who is the most beautiful woman in the Old World? - It depends on who is in the room with me at the time.

Will we see extra Chaos Warrior, god-specific sprues? - Well, I asid it in White Dwarf, which makes it more likely to happen. The timescale is uncertain, though.

Forge World

  • Chaos Dragon (see below)
  • Ogre Rhinox Cavalry
  • More Greater Daemons (one per year) - Slaanesh is next.
  • More dragons - again, 1 per year
  • Chaos cavalry pieces
  • More buildings, including wall sets, a town house, a village store and a chapel.
