Cooling Towers - Daffrid
| Anyone who has been painfully burned during high
school chemistry lessons will remember fractionation techniques and the easy
flamability of low chain hydrocarbons, anyway... the follow piece is
inspired by the cooling towers that can occasional be seen on the remaining
industrial landscape of Britain.
Splitting the terrain into three chunks, the tall tower, the smaller tower and the front drum; The tall tower was constructed using a cardboard tube, with cardboard bracing round the sides, a top and access hatch was also added. The smaller tower was made from that old favourite, the mini pringles tub, a wooden control panel was added and various metal wires were bent and connected from it to the taller tower. The ladder on the side was made from pieces cut from the pringles tub top. The front drum is a can of tonic water (from my G&T days), again with cardboard bracing and a top walkway, another access hatch was made using plastic tubing, the front hand rail was made by sticking a length of metal wire between two roll-plugs (you use them for screwing things into walls). A small platform was added to the side, in this case made from cardboard and lollypop sticks, a connecting pipe was added between the drum and the tall tower. To paint it the whole thing was sprayed in chaos black undercoat (the three pieces were kept separate for the moment) the gray areas where first painted a dark gray then lighter shades were 'stabbed/stippled' over it. The brassy areas where first coated in bestial brown then a mix of gold and and brown were shaded over it, various other details were then picked out. Aging effects were added in various washes of green and brown hopefully representing natural weathering and decay.
