Industrial Buildings - Daffrid
| The Imperium is littered with old industry (much
like northern England), with this in mind and the subtle influence of the
large chemical works and oil terminal that I drive by a lot I decided to
build some. I'll split the piece in two for ease of description, one half is a gas container the other a generic industrial structure. The gas container was made from an old plastic ball I found in the back of the shed, it was quite scuffed and dog-eaten (odd since we don't have a dog). Turning it into terrain was easy; firstly I covered the mold line with a paper band around the equator and stuck the ball (golf tee like) on a short length of plastic pipe, two holes were drilled into the ball at the equator and metal wire was inserted from these to the base. The building is an old mini Pringles tub (it's quite old since the new mini tubs are only 3/4's it size and twice the price) a cone of card was added to the top (quite fiddly ) and card bands were added round the sides. A funnel was added (extracted from a broken Super-Soaker water pistol) and stuck onto the side via a lot of swearing and a thin wire inserted into the funnel and bent so it could be attached to the inside of the tub. A small decal (of tiny cogs) was added to the front to spruce up an otherwise quite plain frontage. The whole lot was attached to a rather solid MDF base. To paint the gas container was a simple affair, after a base coat of dark blue was applied various lighter shades of blue were stippled over the top, as this is mildly more interesting to look at than matt colour, the pipes were painted an orange to contrast. The other structure was painted in the true Imperial style of gray, a dark base coat was added before it was stippled with lighter shades and then drybrushed with metallics. The bands are a mix of bestial brown and gold, again a metallic look was desired. The funnel was given the look of use by browning the nozzle and applying blacking around it's base. I added some ageing effects by using organic brown washes in various corners and crevices and adding mossy green over the top (the sort of organics that occur in a badly maintained gutter).
