Oasis - Steve Freshour

Tools Needed:

Hotwire cutter
Craft glue or Liquid Nails in caulking tube
Rock Molds and plaster (optional)
Static Grass and /or Flocking (optional)
1" Blue, Pink, or White Insulation foam
Textured paint
Spackle or Drywall mudd
Cheap plastic pallette knife
Assorted craft paints and brushes
Tamiya Transparent blue or a Clear Resin
Masonite board
Dremel with sanding drum or sand paper
Jigsaw

How To:

  1. First take your Masonite and cut the base to whatever shape you like, Kidney shaped is good.  Shape the board and clean it up with  the Dremel tool or sand paper and get a good rounded edge.

  2. here is an optional step; I have a few rock molds from 'woodland scenics and plaster' so I used them to make the boarders, but you could use actual rocks, off-cuts from foam or gravel to make your oasis banks. you can also shape some Liquid nails into a bank or cut a ring from foam core and layer it.

  3. Use your Spackle or plaster to smooth out some of the screw ups that are inevitable in your rocks.

  4. Just paint all but, the water area with textured paint and then paint your sand colors once that is dry.
I skipped painting the sand because I masked off the water and all of the rocks in this picture and opted for a Textured spray for a friends gaming board - Fleck Coat Spray - Sante Fe color, it's a sand finish that looks like sandstone about $6.00 per can, not cheap [£4 is quite cheap imo - subEd].

  5. Paint your water however you want, I went for the classic blue, but there is no reason why it can't be a swamp or toxic pool.  I added Tamiya Transparent blue to my pool to give it some depth, or you can add resin, watered down PVA is not really worth using for this effect because these two other options look much better.

The palm trees are from a cake decorating company that has discontinued them, but similar products are available, GW had palm trees in their old 40K starter set.
