Painting: Blood Bowl Ball - petrus

If you are new to painting, ignore talk of highlighting and shading. Just paint one layer of paint on each part of the model. Don't worry about neatness. If you want to repaint it, take the paint off with Mr Muscle Orange Clean.

If your intermediate in painting, this guide should be good for you. You should be able to use it fully and follow it step by step. If your far bettr than me, (as I know many of you out there are) then please post some constructive critiscim for me on the forums.

As the project continues, my wealth of painting experience will hopefully amass. Please stand by me, as I too shall hopefully improve by doing this for you. I will always post a new PPP at least every two months, but I shall aim to update more frequently than that. Anyway, onto the guide!

Paints you will need:
  • Chaos Black
  • Dark Flesh
  • Bleached Bone
  • Boltgun Metal
  • Black Ink
  • Chainmail
  • 'Ardcoat Gloss Varnish
Step 1: The skin

The ball was undercoated chaos black. (Sorry for bad picture quality)

The skin was then painted with dark flesh, leaving black in the recesses.

Step 2: The stitching

Paint the stitching bleached bone and highlight it with skull white.

Step 3: The spikes

Paint the spikes with a flat coat of boltgun metal. Then apply an ink wash of black ink, 1 part ink to 3 parts water. Apply this over the spikes. Then Highlight them with chainmail. Due to the tendency for paint to chip off the spikes, and to make the ball look more like leather, I did something I had never sone before: I gloss varnished the ball. All of it. It is actually O.K. though, and will help me find it when I can't see it on the pitch!

Evaluation

Well, all in all not a bad piece. However, I feel like this was a missed opportunity, as I could have practiced subtle highlighting on the skin of the ball. I should also invest in some purity seal, so that I never have to touch gloss varnish ever again. it may look alright, but believe me I feel tainted. Really tainted.
