Converting: Thousand Sons

Gav's Note: This was written when the first 3rd edition 40k Chaos Codex was released.. at that point Thousand Sons had only 1 figure released.

Many Chaos Players have asked me this at one point or another. Out of all the troops in the chaos book, the Thousand Sons are some of the coolest. Walking suits of armour, totally immune to the vast majority of weaponry and stonking background, Games-Workshop have only ever made one model for these guys.

To make yourself a Thousand son, you need: A plastic Chaos Marine, a Berzerker head (not required, but prefered. The one with the slit for features looks cool), Plastic glue, some form of sculpting tool, a glass of water & Green stuff.

Firstly, some greenstuff advice. Keep your tool & fingers damp. Not dripping wet, but you will find the grenstuff will stick to your fingers otherwise.
Also, take your time! it's no race, some can model faster than others.
The first one of these took my half an hour. After an armies worth (Hey Big J!) I can now do one in about ten minutes.

Anyway.. on to the conversion...

First up, clean off the mouldlines & glue the legs to the base. Assemble and glue the torso on as per a standard marine. Lookit!

Right. take the berzerker head 7 cut off all the detail in the center of the rabbit-ear thingys.
Try to be neat. Failing that, take all the detail off the front.

Now mix some blue stuff to some yellow stuff to make greenstuff ;) you are looking for a colour similar to goblin green, slightly more yellow than blue.
Now take a small peice of greenstuff & make it into a rectangle. Thin & as square as possible.
Then use your tool to push it un under the belt buckle.

Then use clippers to clip the edges square.

Now This bit is optional. I didn't do this on the army, but I did on a squad for someone else ;) It adds character.
add a thin layer from the top corner of the belt buckle right across to the bit the backpack glues on. Make sure it doesn't cover the belt.

Can be added to one side only or both. Maybe one side for Thousand sons, two sides to show the sorceror?

Any way, leave somewhere to dry & find the head you carefully prepared earlier ;)
Fill the gap between the ears with greenstuff. You may find it easy to slap a load in the middle & pinch it to the right thickness with thumb & forefinger.

Now, use the curvy bit on the tool to smooth out all those nasty fingerprints & flatten the edges into the plastic. If you left the band around the outside, sculpt the join.

Now leave to dry & file off fingerprints. Yes, I havent. :P
When dry, glue head to body, arms to body, add boltgun. Jobs a good un ;)
