Squats - petrus | |
| Love them or loathe them, Squats are a sorely missed army for many, and a pain in the neck for a quite a few people too. People constantly ask Games Workshop "Will you bring back Squats?" and constantly get the answer "No". Others get angry as they never liked Squats so they think you shouldn't talk about them. I aim to make sense of this argument so that at least some people stop bickering over them.
For anyone who isn't too sure though about the history of Squats, they are effectively Space Dwarfs. They were humans that inhabited high gravity worlds and spent most of their time mining. They were introduced in the first edition of 40K, Rogue Trader, and a number of models were released. When second edition came, GW said that they would write a Squat codex. However, a few White Dwarf lists later and there was still no codex or new models. Third edition came along and Games Workshop made a big decision: They decided to kill off the Squats. If you wanted to use a Guard army list and Squat models, fine, but the Squats had officially been killed off. They later gave some kind of reason about Tyranids eating them, but left it at that. There are lots of reasons why people want Squats back and I sympathise with them a lot. If an entire race is wiped out people will get mad. Especially after getting told that a Squat codex was on its way and all would be well and good. However, what I think really annoyed Squat players and a few other gamers is the fact that Games Workshop got rid of them completely. I mean, they could have at least said that it would move into a long term project. They wouldn't be removed from the fluff completely, but won't be coming back until we have changed them quite a bit. Then there are the people that are glad Squats are dead. This is normally because "They were stupid" and were just "a fantasy race in space" (hmmm... eldar, elves...). Then of course when these people see angry Squat players they just yell "They are dead, accept it!" Why should they? If GW told you they were getting rid of Necrons after you bought an army and had thought they were really cool, how would you feel? You'd be angry too! So what the hell is wrong with people wanting to see rules, even if they are unofficial, that allow them to use their old models occasionally? Is it too much to ask? However, what annoys a lot of people is why did Games Workshop kill them off? A lot of people think there were lots of behinds the scenes motives (such as accounting etc.) but I think that that is rubbish. Exodites anyone? GW isn’t doing anything with them yet they seem to exist somewhere and weren't killed off because they didn't make money. No. It is very simple: the 40K design team didn't like them. It's that simple. However, to annoy Squat players more is that whenever they ask is there any chance of Squats coming back the answer is always "no". But what will happen about it in the future? Well, firstly, people will continue to ask the Squat question and GW will still be annoyed. However, what is really annoying for Games Workshop is the notorious concept sketch floating around the internet that supposedly depicts a "Demiurg". However, Games Workshop have said it may not have been. So what the hell is it? ![]() Well, it is certainly short and looks like a Squat minus the beard. However, seeing as we don't know what Demiurg look like, we can't say it isn't one. However, they sound a lot like Squats seeing as they "mine stuff" from space. There are other little hints in the fluff but I won't mention them here. The big question here is that will anything related to this picture ever come to be? We can only speculate as I have a strange feeling that although the real answer could be maybe, Games Workshop will say "no" until they know for certain. |
