Dice Cheating 101 - IcedCrow

There are several ways to do this. As I have run a gaming league over the past 6 years, I have seen many creative ways of cheating.

For one we had a guy named Doctor X who went on ebay and actually purchased loaded dice. For two months he cheated his way into the record books... though it's funny as he lost a lot of games with loaded dice as well. Shows you how good he was.

Anyhow... a league member called him on the loaded dice and he claimed a 'voodoo' priest blessed them... I guess we were all stupid. Of course this guy also had a good act of pretending he was totally brain dead which allowed him to fudge rules and then say "oh...the rule is that? I didn't know..." and then turn around to someone else and pull the same trick. Problem was the man was a computer programmer and when speaking about that spoke like a genius.

Someone saw the dice on ebay and gave me an email. I confronted Dr X and he admitted his dice were loaded, but only to use them on us cheaters and power gamers.

****For new players who may not know... if someone has a seperate set of dice they roll for certain things (like a "low" pile that only rolls low numbers and a "high" pile that only rolls high numbers), chances are some or all of the dice are shady.***

Remedies for Loaded Dice: If the user knowingly used loaded dice, excommunication is usually appropriate. We banned Dr X for a year. He ended up giving us the double middle finger and moved off towards Oklahoma/Nevada.

Method 2 - Microwaving / Melting

Hereby the offender places his dice in a microwave, or leaves them in a hot car with the value that he wants facing the top. The plastic dice will melt a little, putting the weight toward the low end. The result is that when thrown, the heavier end tends to end up on the bottom, and the desired result more often than not shows up.

Melted dice are harder to catch. Extreme melted dice obviously look melted, but tricksters who "cook" their dice won't go so far as to leave any real physical evidence. Again you have to look to see ... does the offender use "special" dice for "special" situations? If they do, and often times those dice always show up to his advantage, chances are they are loaded or "cooked".

Method 3 - The-pick-up-the-dice-fast-before-opponent-sees trick

This is cheating but on a level where you can't prove they are cheating. The offender rolls his dice, and then in a split second has his dice picked up before you could see all of the results. What that means for him is some extra armor saves made, or some extra wounds made, or a passed leadership that should have failed.

How do you fix this? Ask your opponent to slow down. If they refuse, finish your game, mark them low on sportsmanship, and then never play against them again. Even if you aren't cheating and you are guilty of this, it is good manners to let your opponent review your dice roll before picking up the bones.

Method 4 - Bowling

Described in the kung fu thread. There are ways to roll dice and influence how they come up without actually having to load the dice or weight them down. Typically you can only do this one die at a time, though some shady gits with skill can actually toss two, three, or even four dice and get them to do what they want (typically they will use a smaller set of dice and use their fingers as conduits to allow the dice to roll off of... hence why five or more is hard if not impossible... you only have four fingers that you can lay down... the thumb is very difficult to use in this instance)

To use this, the offender will claim dice fu or something 'arcane', and then bowl the dice like a bowling ball. Usually they will place their hand about an inch or so from the table, and then roll their fingers down. Their hands are pinching the 1 and 6 side so that they are on the left/right, leaving the 2,3,4, and 5 to roll. The die then "rolls" out of their hand like a wheel... the 1 and 6 on the side.

What this results in is that if you are good enough, you will never roll a 1 (or a 6). Got some nice empire knights or terminators with a 1+ or 2+ save? Great! You will never fail an armor save! You are a tactical genius!

Cheaters of this kind will also usually have a more rounded grade of dice as sharp corners are harder to "roll", they typically bounce and throw off the cheater's wonderful dice skillz. Small dice are easier to use though larger, very round dice also work well.

This tactic is most often used of any of the above, because the dice are legit, and most people don't know about it. Therefore, no whistle no foul.

How can you suspect this bung duggery? Well watch your opponent. Does he place the dice in his hand a certain way? If so he is probably lining the 1/6 side up against his hand to the side. Does he place his hand against the table or close to the table when releasing the dice? It is harder to "bowl" when you drop the dice from a height greater than a couple inches.

If they insist on doing one die at a time, point them to a rulebook where the rules of the game state you should roll all your rolls at once.

Not only are they wasting time, they could also be performing a nice table rape of your army without you even knowing.

Learn the tricks of the tactical genius power gamers my children. Learn them well. That way when someone employs such lowly actions on you you can recognize them for the filth they are.
