A Tale of a Tail - Ophidicus
Why the Ratmen?During one of my many scheming sessions over the past few years, I decided I would collect a Skaven army. Normally, I prefer huge, dark-armoured evil knights, steel demons that smashed all before them with a rage as hot as the Hells. The Skaven are the perfect antithesis to the man-behemoth image, a swarming race of nasty night-things, individually callow and craven, but gathered in numbers, a match for any glorious crusade. On top of this, the many toys dreamt up by the evil minds of clans Moulder and Skryre support them, enough to keep the most evil of schemers (i.e., me!) going until Geheimnisnacht! My army for Dysartes' Tale of Some, More or Many Gamers is themed around the war machines of Clan Skryre, simply because it allows me to blast my opponent into little bitty pieces (doubtless making full use of the marvellous Life is Cheap rule), and in the long run, to explore more Fun with Warpstone, as I get around to playing Warlock Engineer and designing new toys for my little ratty friends to play with. The army: Month OneFirst of all, the rats needed a leader. A Skryre Warlock Engineer was my first fur- *ahem* purchase, a splendid model, decked out in robes, cables and lots of arcane machinery. He was dubbed Gilbert Greenwhisker, an all-round nasty piece of work.I started the army proper with a sensible contingent of rank-and-file Ratmen, in the form of the Clanrat Warriors regiment. I thought it best to get in the first chunk of Rats quick-quick, as I will need five boxes altogether, for a somewhat daunting total of 96 Clanrats. ![]() To add some real weight, I threw in some Stormvermin. Big nasty kill-rats armed with Great Weapons and wearing Skryre's finest armour, they'll make a mess in the right place. To round off Month One's purchases, and to make absolutely clear this was a Clan Skryre army (no assassins!), two Poisoned Wind Globadiers and two Warplock Jezzails joined the ranks. Clan Skryre weapons can be sickeningly destructive, but have several drawbacks: Skaven are hardly the sharpest of marksmen, even when armed with lethally accurate rifles. Sadly, few Ratmen live long enough to master 'holding the boomstick straight'. Skaven also tend to scarper, and scarper quickly, when plans don't go quite the way they're supposed to. I'm sure we all know about the relationship between Plans and The Enemy. Lastly, and most amusingly, Warpstone weapons are infamous for their habit of relieving their owners of certain important assets, like faces. But, like all fates that may befall the lovable little furballs, the old sentiment remains: What do we care, there's plenty more where they came from! ![]() Things to do next month: Games and modelling/ painting.
