Vampire Counts - The Great eBay Experiment - Karhedron

January 1, 2004

I have often read people commenting about how much cheaper it is to buy stuff online, either from online retailers or second hand from eBay. Well I have decided to put it to the test.

I have bought bargains on eBay before but this time I plan on doing something a little different. I am starting a Vampire Counts army from scratch which means that I will need practically every unit in the army and I plan to spend as little money as possible.

I am going to buy 2nd hand, trade my spare units from 40K etc to put this army together. So far I have bought a unit of 6 Black knights for £12 which is half price, not a bad start at all.

I will update this thread every so often (assuming it doesn't get wasted ;) ) so people can check out my progress. If you are interested in helping out with this project and have any spare VC units, please check out the thread below where I have listed all the stuff I have for trade.

Good deals can indeed be found (on eBay). Sadly, the army boxes are usually only available shortly after a new army is released. I have not seen one on eBay for several months and I think it will be easier to buil up the army from individual components.

I have just bought a Necromancer for £2.80. Not bad and about 40% below retail price. :)

January 6, 2004

Oh well, so much for cheapness, I splashed out on the Ltd Ed standard bearer for £17. That pretty much used up the money I saved on my first purchase of the Black Knights.

Still, it's one sweet figure. :)

January 11, 2004

Well slightly overdue a post here so I will put in an update. I have now picked up a Spirit Host for £4 and a Banshee for £2 which represents a third off the retail price on each.

I also have several trades in the negotiation stage so we will have to see exactly what materializes there. Below is my running total compared to the new cost.
6 Black Knights. £15 (£30)
Spirit Host. £4 (£6)
Banshee. £2 (£3)
Lt Ed Banner £17 (?)

Total spent £38 for £39 of models plus whatever the Banner bearer would be to buy new.

probably easiest to say I am breaking even and have a free Banner Bearer to show for it.

January 13, 2004

I have just picked up a Zombie regiment for £8 including P&P. That is almost half retail price (normally £15). This brings my running total to £46 spent for £54 worth of models (plus the "free" banner bearer).

January 14, 2004

Well due to overwhelming demand (from Dysartes if not from anyone else) I have painted my first Spirit Host and attached an image below.

Here is my next unit, a Banshee.

In response to:
Nice one. I never thought of painting a banshee in anything but grey and white. Whats with the red spot? A wound? If it's a wound, I would use a darker red.

Yes, the red spot is a wound. The model has a hole there (perhaps representing where she was stabbed through the heart?). Anyway, it doesn't show up so well on the photo because of the lighting but it is actually quite dark and glossy. I wanted it to be the one point of bold colour in an otherwise faded model. The memory of her mortal wound is still strong.

I have bought from Nick before and he is indeed a very good trader. However I am trying to get more than a 10% discount. There are a couple of reputable online traders who offer discounts of 10-15% but they are my last resort.

By buying 2nd hand and trading, I am hoping to build up most of my army for about half the normal retail price (that is the aim at least). Eventually, I will probably have to buy a few units new just to complete the army and when I do, I will probably go to Nu Gaming or Miniature Madness for my last purchases.

I hope to get as far as possible before I do however.

In response to:
GW still allows on-line selling of their products by indies in Europe and the UK?? Enjoy it while it lasts people.

GW HQ in Lenton have stated that the decison by GW US to ban online discounts was purely a local decision and something they disapprove of. there are no plans to introduce a similar ban in Europe.

GW US is allowed enough autonomy to make these decisions but it is not a company-wide policy, only a local decision taken by the company execs in one country.

I have just bought a Wight Lord BSB for £2.50 including P&P, normal price £6. I have decided to count the Ltd Ed Standard bearer as exactly what I payed for him as it makes it simpler to keep a running total. That brings my current expenditure to:

£48.50 spent for £77 worth of models. Or 63% of the normal retail price.

Not quite up to my target of building an army for half of the RRP but not far off either. A few more shrewd buys and I might get closer.

January 20, 2004 - Later that day....

Woo hoo, I just got a box of Zombies for an old Dreadnought. Not bad.

That brings my running total to £48.50 spent for £92 or 53%. Getting closer....

January 21, 2004

OK, I have just got another unit of Zombies for £8 incouing P&P, that's nearly half price. My new running total is now.

£56.50 spent for £107 of models. That's still averages 53%.

I am probably going to mail order a few random bits that I am unlikely to find on eBay in the next few days so that may affect my percentage somwhat.

January 24, 2004

Wow! I have just made the most amazing win on eBay. It was a very poor picture so not many people bid on it but I managed to clear up the picture and realised it was a good buy. I won the auction for £18 including postage and packaging. It consisted of the following unpainted models.

4 bases of spirit host swarms
2 Banshees
4 Black Knights
10 Grave Guard
Vlad, Isabella and Manfred Von Carstein
and a mounted Necromancer

This lot comes to about £80!

That means they are less than a quarter of the normal price and they haven't even been primed.

That brings my running total to £74.50 spent for £187 worth of minitaures. 40% of normal retail price is very good indeed.

January 24, 2004 -Later that day....

In response to:
Cool, good job!

How much of your army do you have now then?

Quite a lot. I have a couple more deals in negotiation and when they are done, all I will need is a few units of Dire Wolves and a couple more Vampires. I am well past the half way stage.
