Rage's New Army: Relictors Part Two

Right. After the last article, we were left with the first squad for my new Relictors army.

As with all 40k armies, you need a HQ and two Troops choices for your force. This is as good a place as any to get started on a force. Infact, it's probly the best place to start!

So a second tactical squad appeared on my desk... again all of the Dark Angel symbols and the flash were filed off, the bolter barrels drilled out and so on :)
This unit had a Missile Launcher and Plasmagun, arms for which were Chaos Marine ones for the gaunttlets (and the star edging filed off)
As the Space Marine Missile Launcher has the arm attached, i had to greenstuff on the gauntlet and part of the chapter symbol onto the arm itself... didn't turn out too bad... luckily with large squads noone will notice too much (he hopes!)
As I was sticking to "pure" codex, the squad needed a Veteran (a second in command). The Legion of the Damned supplied a more ornate boltgun and that was sorted.

Anyway, Once the 9 marines and the rhino were assembled, I turned my attention to the squad sarge.
As the other squad was lead by a Asmodai conversion, I thought i'd continue the theme and use the Dark Angel characters.
My bitz box yeilded an Azrael for this squad. as with the rest of the Relictors, i started to take all of the Dark Angels symbols off. His chest angel was hacked off, the chest peice filed. I then needed to replace the armoured pipes running up the belly, then rebuild the bottom of the chest peice.
A couple other winged swords came off (hanging on a chain and on the holster). These were then all replaced with greenstuff skulls.
His gun arm was hacked off (including the uberdetailed shoulderpad), replaced with a normal marine arm and shoulder.
The sword hand was replaced as well, a marines bolt pistol hand taking its place.
As all the veterans were going to have power weapons (modelled to look like daemon weapons), i took archeons sword from my bitz box.
It was a little long (being nearly aas tall as the fig itself!) and cut a section out in the middle. Once glued back, i greenstuffed over the gap, covering the join.
A file once the greenstuff was dry covered the join perfectly.

With my minimum two troops squads completed, I needed a Commander to lead them. A rummage throughout my bitz box yeilded the limited edition Emperors champion.
Wanting him to be different, I cut off the sword and templar icons. After carefully filing the armour plates on the shoulder, forehead and greave flat, out came the greenstuff, a Crux terminatus (or a simple attempt... the final one is the 4th attempt :P ) on the leg greave, the relictors icon on the shoulderpad (and it looks quite good if i say so myself!).
As I wanted a daemonblade for him, I spent an age rumaging through my bitz boxs and the GW catalogues.
Eventually the desicion was between Archeon's sword or Abaddons. Archeons has a cool shape, while Abaddons has the great daemonic faces on the side.
The desiding factor was abaddons sword is really thick, archeons isn't. But I still wanted daemonic faces, so out came the greenstuff and a set of daemon faces appeared on the side :)
To make him stand out more as well, I put him on a larger base and used a method siimilar to the water base tutorial to give the impression of a melted daemon infront that complemented his pose quite well.
Painting took well over a month, starting at a 50/50 chaos black / shadow grey and working upto a 50/50 shadow grey / skull white
And as a result hes one of my favourite paintjobs

Coming next month, a command squad and assault squad!
