Gimli's Black Templars

View the Army List

Why Black Templars?

I love the gothic background to the Chapter, the whole feeling of self-righteousness they have. The cover art on the Warhammer 40,000 box was really inspirational as well. The one model that prompted me to do the army would have to be the limited edition Emperor's Champion, by Juan Diaz. The fiction in that White Dwarf about Sigismund was really cool as well.

What's the theme to the army?

The main idea with this army is movement. Everything in the army must move, nothing can afford to sit still. If it can't move fast enough to get into combat, then it's redundant, and doesn;t get to be in the army. Hence each squad has transports.

How did you go about painting the army?

When I first started painting the army, I used a white undercoat, and much madness then followed as I painted the black on over the top. Nowadays I use a black undercoat, and work up through grey to white on the white areas. If you look at the models, you can see that much of the armour isn;t highlighted - I decided to concentrate on the detail over just highlighting them. Areas like the scriptures on their armour, and the scrolls everywhere needing steady hands to paint.

How well does the army perform on the battlefield?

Well, let's put it this way - I've never drawn with the army. It either wins, or it loses. I tend to have success against other close combat armies, with the notable exceptionf of Korne- damn Bloodletters, with their S5 power weapons. I only have medium success against shooting armies. For example, I was playing Bolly's Iron Warriors, and lost 3 Rhinos in turn 1, with 8 men dead inside one fo them. Needless to say, the game wasn;t that fun for the army, and I ended up losing.

Are there any conversions you're particularily proud of?

The Dreadnoughts. I think I was the first person to use the Dreadnought-with-sword idea, and I feel I was inspirational to others who have done it. Whenever I attend tournaments with the Templars, the Dreadnoughts get a lot of attention. There's even been some interest from Forge World, but nothing seems to have come of it. There are a lot of simple conversions as well, arm swaps and the like. I do have a big conversion planned, in the form of a Terminator squad, based on the Grey Knight Terminators, using Broadswords and storm bolters.

Have any units in the army out=performed themselves consistently?

The Chaplain - he's unbelieveable, it's fantastic. He always dies, but he normally takes a fair swathe of the enemy with him. In one game, he killed a Daemon Prince, a squad of possessed, a spawn and 4 Khorne BErserkers - unfortunately, the fifth one got him. I try to play to the spirit of the Emperor's Champion, who finds the hardest thing in the enemy army and goes to "have words".

Have you had any memorable games with the army?

I've had a few, it must be said. One of them, in a tournament - I was playing an Italian guy, who was fielding Imperial Guard. Because of the langauge barrier we had trouble keeping track of the number of turns, but I counted about ten turns (I wasn't cheating. Honest!). At the end, we ended up making the result up, as neither of us had a clue what it was.

In the same tournament, I was playing a guy with Feral Orks, who decided to field 2 Giant Squiggoths in a 1500pt army! I managed a draw, somehow. The guy was really excited about his Warboss on a boar, and had even made up a chant for him, which he did at the top of his lungs whenever the warboss was doing anything. He charged this Warboss into the squad the Emperor's Champion was in - the Champion took him down to 1 wound before dying. AT this point, a Neophyte stepped up to the plate, and killed the Warboss. A Neophyte!

I've played Bolly's Iron Warriors numerous times, and some of my best games have been against him. Unfortunately, he no longer has the army, having sold it. Admittedly, in most of the games I've played against Bolly, he's proceeded to kick my arse, but it's always a laugh.

I've played a lot of games against Steve Scott, with him using his Emperor's Children, Dark Eldar, Imperial Fists or Lost and the Damned - no matter what he uses, he hasn't managed to beat me yet. I respect hima s a gamer, but when he plays me he has terrible luck - much to the amusement of anyone watching!
