Finbar's Alpha Legion

View the Army List

Why Alpha Legion?
I’d love to say the background, but it wouldn’t be true, as there simply isn’t a lot of it for Alpha Legion to my knowledge. When the plastic Khorne Berserkers plastic kit came out, I really wanted some in an army, yet everyone else and their Grandma had them too at that time, all painted like Worldeaters. A quick flick through the codex later, and I had decided that the Alpha Legion colours were the nicest alternative, so my blue Khorne army was born! With the release of the new codex though, I pulled my old army out and converted it to a more sensible and balanced army.

What’s the theme to the army?
The theme to the army is being dead sneaky basically. Every model gets the Infiltrate ability at a discount price, so it would be rude not to take it. This means I have rather restricted myself, as I can’t take tanks, or a number of other nice units like Terminators. Also, with the Alpha legion being the furthest from the Eye of Terror, I decided to leave out mutations and daemons as far as possible too.

How did you go about painting the army?
I started with a black undercoat, and used Regal Blue as a basecoat. On top of this, a mix of Regal Blue and Ultramarines Blue was used. The only model with highlights further than this was the Lieutenant – I decided on neatness rather than excessive detail. The silver trim was Chainmail with a black wash. After these two stages the models are pretty well finished, so there are only smaller details to do after that. This can get models done quite quickly, and most of the army was done on the night before a tournament! The army was painted to fit in with the colour scheme shown in the first 3rd edition Chaos codex, rather than the newest one, as by the time it was released, half of the army was already painted.

Why snow bases?
The white brings out the marines’ eyes. Seriously though, I think the white does bring out the model a lot more than a very dark base.

I was rather bored of the brown base with static grass, or just plain painted Goblin Green, and I just decided to be awkward by choosing a scheme, which won’t match anybody’s gaming tables!

How well does the army perform on the battlefield?
The army unfortunately isn’t very consistent at all. Usually, the games are very close, with very few VP in it - I think that the losses outweigh the wins though. It has a hard time with anything that is good in combat especially, such as Khorne, as I have a definite lack of dedicated combat units.

Are there any conversions you’re particularly proud of?
An awful lot of the models are converted in some way, seeing as I combined quite a few different plastic kits making the marines. My favourite model is my Lieutenant, who is probably the most extensive conversion in the army. Although still not a hugely difficult model to make, the finished model turned out quite nicely. I have plans to make a Terminator squad out of Grey Knight Terminators, although having seen the new plastic Space Marine ones, that project is on hold for now.

Have any units outperformed themselves consistently?
Definitely the Havoc squad with Autocannons. The rate of fire they put out, especially in combination with the heavy bolters, is usually enough to put down most infantry units, and since I gave them the Tank Hunters ability, they have also been consistently taking down tanks. There is also an Aspiring Champion with a Power Fist that has not been particularly special until the last tournament I went to, where he killed two Black Templars chaplains after being charged by them, in a fairly spectacular manner.

Have you had any memorable games with the army?
One game in the Sheffield store against Liam Davies’ Khorne army was a very memorable one, although I lost it horribly. I am petrified of Daemon Princes, and consequently poured everything into the beast that I had, from Lascannons to Bolt Pistols and even charging it with Havoc Squads! Even with the fairly poor rolling for his 2+ save, he refused to fail his ‘Feel No Pain’ saves, and by the time he went down, my whole army had been ravaged by the rest of the Khorne force which I had duly ignored…

Another one, which was also memorable for all the wrong reasons, was against a Tyranid player who took 5 monstrous creatures against me in a 1000 point game. That one was short to say the least. And messy. Oh yes.
