Faith Without Deeds is Worthless - Part 3 - Vivi

Painting

Well painting Quartered colour schemes isn't the easiest thing to do in the world, mainly because you’ll never feel you’ve gotten the lines straight or exactly in the middle. However Marines do offer a little respite in this area. First off is the Backpack, this covers the back join, second in the aquilla or similar in the middle. This covers most of the central join. This usually means you only need to take special care on the groin areas, and no one looks there anyway. The First area was always the Blue areas to be done.

For those of you who don’t know how I paint (most of you) I can only really paint effectively one way, layering. So after the undercoat went on the first coat of blue. Regal Blue being a dark colour was brilliant for this, just slapping it on in the blue areas making sure it went in all the cracks but not onto the joining areas of the marines armour. When this had dried on goes the Enchanted Blue. This is the main colour of my marines (just to catch your eye) and this goes over all the areas of the Regal Blue just trying to make sure you can still leave the Regal showing in the shallower areas and in certain “darker” areas. Finally a 50/50 mix of Enchanted Blue and Ice Blue is used to highlight the areas, this really brings the models to life and the models can look a little bland without it.

The Red parts of the marines are only done in two colours. First Scab Red is applied in the same way as the Regal Blue and then Red Gore goes on like the Enchanted blue. There is, however, a need to use 1-3 coats in areas to make it stand out as I’m not going even try highlighting the red - I know it’ll turn out pink, it always does.

The areas in the middle of the chests (according to the Black Library book Insignium Astartes) for Brazen Claws display their company. Now as I like the yellow effect in the middle it means that my Marines are part of the 2nd Company. The Yellow was painted using the same layering technique, first was Bad Moon Yellow with Sunburst yellow over the top, simple and effective. The Eyes were also painted in the same way. Finally the metal on the Boltguns is Boltgun Metal with a slight Mithril Silver tint on certain areas.

The bases are something new for this army. I actually based the models before I started painting the models. Here I’ve used sand to give it a texture and when that’s dried I’ve applied broken and chopped bits of sprue to the bases to give it a ruined cityscape look to it. I kind of like the look though I can’t seem to get the colours right on them, this will take a little bit longer to get right.

The Shoulder Pads area all hand painted because of a lack of a decent Games Workshop produced one. They take a bit of time but are well worth the effort when you see an entire squad on show.

At the time of writing this article I have a 5 Tactical Marines finished (4 Boltguns, 1 Plasma Gun) and I’m well on the way to getting the Land Raider Crusader finished. There should be a couple of picks in the article spread around and just click on them to get bigger pictures, simple.
