When we first saw this army we were blown away, we're petty
sure you will be too.

What attracted you to play an Adeptus Mechanicus Army?
What attracted me to this army is the genuine climate and feel of the
Adeptus Mechanicus. I was fascinated with Adeptus Mechanicus for quite a
long time, but only now I tried to make myself an army of them.
What's the theme of the army?
The army is in fact an Archeotech Excavation Expedition, with a conclave of
high Technomagii choosing where to go, what rumour to pursue and where to
dig for archeotech relics. As their search often takes them to treacherous worlds and puts them in direct conflict with the natives, they use Leman
Russ and Demolisher tanks as bulldozers, and highly trained Skiitarii as
both their main defence and excavation units.

Are there any conversions you're particularly proud of? [Which pretty
much applies to the whole thing]
The Hellhound, based on the great Forgeworld design, uses a hairspray cap
for the tank, and has over 170 custom bolts all over. On the other hand, the
Techno Magii conclave was pretty much sculpted from scratch, mostly with
Magic Sculp. Also, the first Skiitarii models converted from the Bretonnian
Men-at-arms gave me such a strong image of what I want the army to look like
I could then proceed sculpting my own custom infantry models – the Iron
Brotherhood.

How did you go about painting the army?
Over black undercoat I painted the metallic parts Tin Bitz, then drybrushed
Boltgun Metal and Chainmail over it. Then I painted the red parts Bestial
Brown, followed by a thin coat of Blood Red. I washed it with Red Gore and
Scab Red, reapplied Blood Red to raised parts, and washed it all with Black.
I then painted all the black parts: I mixed Shadow Grey with Black and
painted it over the black parts. I then highlighted the edges with Shadow
Grey, washed it with the original mix, washed it with Black, then
highlighted with Shadow Grey again, and painted straight black over the dark
places.

How well does the army perform on the battlefield?
At first I played the Skiitarii models as Grenadiers, but I was surprised by
how weak the Storm Troopers are. Right now it’s pretty random, as I use
almost all my infantry as Deep Striking Veterans plus some HQ, all
plasma-armed. I found I cannot rely on the infantry to take on anything
serious due to the many random factors that come to play the moment they
turn on the table. The tanks, on the other hand… I love them! The only
downside is that tanks are pretty random too (they can withstand everything
or go off in the 1st turn).

Have any units in the army out-performed themselves consistently?
Not really. They all have their good and bad days. Leman Russes usually
hit so badly I prefer to just use the Heavy Bolters even on Marines, but
when they sometimes hit they tend to do things like annihilating a Falcon
with both Harlequins and Farseer on board.
Have you had any memorable games with the army?
We had a 1223pts tournament with swapping armies after each game – so that
in fact there were 10 games played, 5 of which were with your own army, and
the other half with your opponents’ armies. My army is very random and has
its own list of priority targets, which resulted in me losing or drawing
most of the battles with my army, and then winning with the opponent’s
army with the exception of Leader’s Dark Eldar Witch Cult. It almost made
me thinking that I should play with any other army rather than this one, but
it was mainly due to bad luck.

Do you have a typical Army List?
I usually play with the same list, where I just add or throw away some units
to match the points agreed. It’s all based on 3 Leman Russes or
Demolishers (any combination) with 2-3 Hellhounds. As Troops there are 2
minimal sized grenadier squads with plasma (or without to save on points;
they don’t usually do anything other than hold my quarter), Elites consist
of 3 Deep Striking Veteran Squads with Carapace and 3 plasmas each, and HQ
is usually a Deep Striking 4-plasma squad with Carapace, plus up to 2
Special Weapons squads with 2 meltas, carapace and Demo Charge each.
Any future plans for them?
I will definitely change the list I’m using. That’s the beauty of this
army: I can take almost any list and find that my models and their
background is perfectly represented by it. I’ve been thinking of using
some LotD list, or some Abhuman doctrines (like Slow and Purposeful and Feel
no Pain – it represents Mech troopers surprisingly well). Right now I’m
building 3 Knight titans to replace the Leman Russes, and 3 4-legged robots
to replace the Hellhounds. I also have an idea how to represent cavalry
models and jumppack-equipped models, just needs building some!
